But the material choice changes whether the rope floats, how it responds to moisture and sunlight, how much it may elongate, how it handles in production, and what evidence a buyer should request. Choosing by name or lowest price alone can create the wrong application fit, avoidable samples, rework and customer complaints.

What Is PP Rope?

PP rope is made from polypropylene. The British Plastics Federation’s polypropylene material overview describes PP as a linear hydrocarbon polymer with the general expression CnH2n and gives a typical material density of about 0.905 g/cm³. That figure is below water density, which explains why PP is commonly considered a floating material reference.

The same BPF overview states that PP does not melt below about 160°C and describes good chemical and fatigue resistance, while noting that additives can be applied to improve specific properties. These are resin-level references. They should not be used as a rope working-temperature limit or as a promise that every PP rope will have the same ultraviolet, abrasion or chemical performance.

For rope selection, Teufelberger’s fiber-rope raw-material notes describe polypropylene as light and buoyant in water, while placing it below several other fibers for abrasion and temperature resistance. In B2B purchasing terms, PP is often assessed when economy and floating behavior are central—but the buyer should explicitly request UV stabilization where long outdoor exposure is expected.

What Is PE Rope?

PE rope is made from polyethylene, a family that includes grades such as HDPE and LDPE. The British Plastics Federation lists an HDPE density range of 0.944–0.965 g/cm³ and an LDPE density range of 0.917–0.930 g/cm³. Both published ranges are below water density, so the underlying material family is commonly used where floating behavior is useful.

BPF describes HDPE as flexible and waxy, with good low-temperature toughness down to −60°C in its materials overview, and describes good chemical resistance for the grade. This is not a performance claim for every PE rope: exact behavior depends on the grade, yarn type, processing, rope construction, pigments/additives and the actual working surface.

Teufelberger’s rope material guidance places polyethylene among the low-density rope fibers used in water-related and general applications. For a buyer, PE should be considered with explicit questions about fishing/aquaculture conditions, UV exposure, abrasion path, line handling and packing—not only with a request for a diameter.

What Is Nylon Rope?

Nylon rope is commonly described as polyamide rope. The British Plastics Federation’s polyamides overview identifies nylon 6/6 and nylon 6/12 among the polyamide families and notes that moisture absorption can affect dimensional stability. It also explains that increasing moisture can make polyamide more flexible and impact resistant while reducing strength and stiffness below its glass-transition temperature.

That moisture sensitivity is a key B2B distinction. A buyer selecting nylon for an application that expects shock absorption or higher elongation should define whether the required evidence is for dry, conditioned or wet material and should not compare it directly with a dry report from another supplier. The finished rope’s construction, diameter and test route remain essential.

Teufelberger’s technical rope guidance describes nylon as having high breaking load and high elongation, and reports water uptake of up to 7% in its material notes. What Is Polyester Rope?

Polyester rope commonly refers to a rope made with polyester fibers, often PET-based in the broader polymer family. The British Plastics Federation’s polyesters overview describes very low water absorption compared with nylon, good chemical resistance, dimensional stability, low creep and color stability as relevant material-family characteristics.

For rope-specific technical context, Teufelberger’s rope-core material notes describe polyester as a general-purpose material with good tensile properties, low elongation and good UV resistance. Their UV guidance also reports that polyester ropes were less susceptible than polyamide ropes in the cited test comparison. This supports polyester as a candidate for outdoor, dimensional-stability-focused selection, but it does not remove the need for the exact finished-rope test evidence and UV formulation confirmation.

A buyer considering polyester should define whether the need is lower elongation, outdoor exposure, water/salt-water environment, handling, abrasion contact or dimensional stability. “Polyester rope” remains incomplete until construction, diameter, mass per metre, color, UV requirement, packing and the relevant finished-rope evidence are agreed.

Material-versus-rope reminder
Polyester’s material characteristics may make it attractive for an application, but construction can change handling, elongation and abrasion behavior. A three-strand, double braid and hollow braid are not interchangeable merely because all are polyester.

Which rope material floats?
